There is not a day that goes by where I do not hear at least 1 movie quote from a friend or as I pass by someone on the street. Among my group of friends, we find it amusing to throw film quotes into our everyday conversation, and have a nice chuckle at it every time. It seems like even if we say the same quote like 10 times in the same day, it is still funny. This is probably be the case because my friends and I are movie fanatics and love to quiz each other on who knows what quote and who doesn’t (those who didn’t know the quotes would ultimately FAIL). Now even though we quote tons of movies amongst ourselves, we know when to not do it in front of others. We definitely don’t want or try to be “That Guy.” “That Guy” takes it upon himself to quote the movie incessantly for the next six months. He uses every opportunity to slide a quote into the conversation whether it actually fits or not. Quite often the quote that he chooses comes directly from the movie’s previews so everyone is already familiar with it regardless of whether they have seen the movie.” So I guess what I’m trying to say is that it is definitely okay and very fun to quote movies in your group of friends, or even to yourself if you want to… but try to not quote too excessively in front of other people because they might find it quite annoying (unless they are total movie buffs and love quoting too… if that is the case, forget everything I’ve said and quote away!!!).
A few quotes from movies that I like and use often…probably too often:
Night at the Roxbury: “(1)So, I was standin there, waitin to use the payphone, when the guy, who was on thephone, turns around and tips his hat…like this…(2)and WHO do you think that guy was? (1) EMILIO ESTEVES! (2)the mighty duck man I SWEAR TO GOD…i was there! (1) Of course you were there! You were the one that screamed the breakfast clubbers name. (2) I was like EMIIIIILLIIIOOOOOO!!”
American Pie: “Oh! And this one time….at band camp…”

I enjoyed your blog his week I quote movies with my family when it is our favorite movies when we all know the movies and it is all our favorite lines. I agree with you that if the other person is not that into movies or movie quotes it is not good to talk about them or use them all the time that is how my roomate is she doesn’t recognize them so it can be awkward! nice job

I appreciated your blog because I can really relate to it. I feel that people learn quickly who knows “movie culture” and who does not. When I say a movie quote to my roomate even if it is from a movie we have recently watched together she can not get it. However, my family has favorite movies and we quote them all the time together. Good advice on not quoting excessivley.

It’s great to see that you are able to qoute movies with your friends like that. Personally I don’t think that I would so good at qouting movies because I don’t watch that many movies in the first place. And I agree that nobody wants to be that guy who qoutes to many movies to the point that it gets annoying.

The That Guy is very true. I think that every group of friends has atleast one. Yes its funny the first couple of times but when your entire vocabulary consists of movie quotes then it gets old very fast.

In my expert opinion, I believe to not be “that guy” is one of if not the most over used quotes ever. I agree with you that movie quotes should be used in conversation because it adds humor and lightens up the mood. Only negative is if your delivery of a movie quote is not good or if they have no idea what it is from. The other day i whipped out a quote form happy gilmore when I said “excuse me I’m just trying to find my ball here. this is golf not hockey.” no one knew what I was saying so i got blank looks.
